What you will be responsible for: The Corporate Tax Manager will report to the Director of Domestic Tax and work collaboratively with the Tax Directors, Tax Managers and extended finance team. Additionally, the Sr. Tax Analyst II will report to the Corporate Tax Manager, and the Corporate Tax Manager may supervise other tax professionals on various projects within the department. Position responsibilities will include developing and recommending tax policy for MFS and its subsidiaries, as well as providing technical assistance to both employees of MFS and its subsidiaries and to members of the Corporate Finance and Legal Departments and outside auditors relating to Federal, state and domestic income tax matters affecting MFS and its subsidiaries. The Corporate Tax Manager will provide assistance to Corporate Finance employees as well as other MFS departments and outside auditors on complex tax issues. Working with the Director of Domestic Tax, the Corporate Tax Manager will ensure that Federal and state tax compliance requirements for MFS and its subsidiaries are met accurately and efficiently. The Corporate Tax Manager will support both federal and state income tax audits and will review federal and state income tax provisions.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Assists with all aspects of ASC 740 and IAS12 Accounting for Income Taxes including;

  • Calculating and reviewing the quarterly U.S. income tax provision and related journal entries;
  • Calculating and reviewing effective tax rate and preparing rate reconciliations;
  • Reviewing and tracking tax exposures and developing documentation to support income tax positions taken for financial statement purposes and related reserves recorded for uncertain tax positions;
  • Return-to-provision calculations; and
  • Preparing and reviewing current and deferred tax reconciliations and analysis of tax general ledger accounts

  • Performs technical research and analysis of complex domestic and foreign tax issues and corporate transactions (mergers, acquisitions or liquidations and reorganizations) using the Internal Revenue Code, regulations and editorial materials or secondary sources (Checkpoint, BNA portfolios, etc.) for MFS and its subsidiaries. Adequately communicates his/her conclusions/recommendations orally and/or in writing.
  • Review the tax provision portion of the financial statement disclosure for MFS and its subsidiaries including identification of temporary and permanent differences and development of effective rate schedule. Reviews financial statements to assure that adequate tax disclosures have been made, including capital loss carry forwards.
  • Works with Tax Director and other interested personnel (including independent auditors, MFS Legal, MFS Compliance and MFS management) to understand and resolve corporate tax issues as they arise.
  • Trains and develops Corporate Tax staff and others on tax matters.
  • Reviews Federal and state income, franchise tax returns as well as foreign tax returns.
  • Manages state audits and supports federal audits, including interaction with revenue agents, discussion and resolution of issues and making recommendations as to proposed adjustments and closing agreements. Oversees technical research of tax issues and reviews technical responses to IRS and/or state auditor requests in connection with formal or informal audits.
  • Coordinates with outside auditors to outline responsibilities for outsourced projects and coordination of timing.
  • Interprets and applies new tax rules, regulations and procedures as they impact MFS and its subsidiaries as well as the application of current tax rules to new investment products.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as requested.

  • CPA or master's degree specializing in Taxation or equivalent degree is required.
  • Must have at least 6-8 years' tax-specific experience, with at least six years' experience in a senior tax role in public accounting, corporate tax department, or other equivalent experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to interact in a positive manner with Corporate Finance employees as well as other MFS departments and outside advisors and auditors.
  • Must have strong business writing and verbal communication skills.
