We are transitioning to a hybrid work environment where both remote work and the office play a critical role. Our vision is a future where all employees are empowered to work flexibly to drive the best outcomes for our clients. Flexible work is a mindset and a core value. Our employees are encouraged to work remotely two days a week as a standard practice and will have flexibility in terms of working hours.

Tracing our roots to 1928, Wellington Management Company, LLP is one of the world's largest independent investment management firms. With over US$1.4 trillion in assets under management as of 31 December 2021, we serve as a trusted adviser to institutional clients and mutual fund sponsors in over 60 countries. Our innovative investment solutions are built on the strength of proprietary, independent research and span the global capital markets, including equity, fixed income, multi-asset, and alternative strategies. As a private partnership whose sole business is investment management, our long-term views and interests are aligned with those of our clients. We are committed to attracting a talented and diverse workforce, and to fostering an open, collaborative, and inclusive culture because we believe multiple perspectives lead to more informed investment and business decisions. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we welcome people with diverse life experiences, fresh ideas, and specialized subject-matter expertise.

Wellington has been investing in private markets for many years, and the Firm launched its first dedicated private capital fund in 2014. Today, the Private Equity Platform currently manages approximately $5 billion in committed capital across a broad range of private equity strategies including late-stage growth, multi-stage sustainability venture, early-stage venture, and hybrid financials and is one of the fastest growing investment groups within Wellington. We have built broad private market capabilities powered by the innovative spirit of a boutique and the resources and stability of a global investment manager. We aim to use our global scale, sector research, sustainability expertise and market reach to help partner with innovative, disruptive companies in the private market. Today, we invest globally and focus on consumer, technology, health care, biotechnology, financial services, and climate technology. Our industry networks, deep insights, and our private and public markets expertise make us strong partners for entrepreneurs.

POSITION

Working closely with the Director of ESG, Private Investments, the Associate Director will be responsible for helping lead and support the development and execution of our private investment ESG strategy alongside the private investment teams. The Associate Director will help to develop frameworks and strategies for incorporating sustainability factors into portfolio company research, diligence, decision making and monitoring. In addition to this ESG research and due diligence work pre-investment, the Associate Director will also engage and consult with private portfolio company boards and management teams post-investment on how they can improve their ESG profiles over the course of our investment. The Associate Director will be expected to stay abreast of evolving industry developments outside of Wellington and will have the opportunity to represent the team and communicate our ESG integration process to Limited Partners, consultants, and prospects, and represent the firm's ESG initiatives in external settings (conferences, etc).

RESPONSIBILITIES

In partnership with the Director, ESG, Private Investments and/or the private investment team, responsibilities will include:

• Enhancing our current framework of ESG factors to consider when assessing new private investments, focusing on the most material ESG issues (and corresponding metrics) per industry to assess potential risks/opportunities.

• Advancing the incorporation of ESG factors into the investment process, and working with deal teams to assess strengths/weaknesses of potential portfolio companies and identifying areas where we can engage to encourage improvement over the long term.

• Developing the necessary tools and infrastructure to collect ESG data from portfolio companies to be tracked and analyzed over time, and communicating this research to both companies and Limited Partners.

• Engaging with existing portfolio company boards and management teams to enhance ESG practices over the course of the investment; consulting with and preparing late-stage companies for IPO, offering a full ESG review of business and how respective companies may be ultimately received by public market investors.

• Assisting in the development of future sustainable private investment products to support expansion plans (including private credit).

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

The following essential skills are required for the role:
  • Investment acumen and passion - We are seeking an Associate Director who is passionate about financial markets and sustainability issues and can apply expertise across these dimensions to the private investment process. The ideal candidate will bring subject matter expertise on governance topics and environmental and social issues, along with an understanding of how these issues can impact an investment thesis in the private markets.
  • Superior collaboration and influencing skills - The successful candidate will enjoy contributing to a highly collaborative investment environment and will embrace the benefits of overlapping lines of idea generation. S/he will build strong trusting relationships internally with colleagues and externally with clients, prospects, and company boards and management teams. The ability to provide a point of view and challenge the status quo is critical, as is the humility to admit mistakes and a desire to learn from others; s/he must recognize the benefits of diverse perspectives. The ability to communicate (both verbally and in writing) action-oriented business solutions and investment recommendations clearly and with conviction and contribute to an open sustainable dialogue is important.
  • Growth mindset - The flexibility and openness to continue learning, evolving and growing as an analyst. S/he will have a global perspective and creative approach for thinking about innovation and the evolution of sustainable investing, including ESG integration. This is especially critical given ESG integration in venture capital is still a developing practice, and the market is quickly evolving.
