POSITION:  EQUITY RESEARCH ASSOCIATE / PORTFOLIO MANAGER

Below is a description of the Portfolio Manager Role. Applicants with less experience will be considered at the Equity Research Associate level.

As a result of substantial growth, Westerkirk Capital, a private investment company based in Victoria, BC is seeking a Portfolio Manager, Equities. The organization is a single-family office investment enterprise managing assets via internal direct and third-party/external managers across a variety of portfolios and asset classes including fixed income, public equity, private equity, hedge funds, infrastructure, and real estate. Reporting to the Senior Investment Officer, the Portfolio Manager will be responsible for sourcing and leading the evaluation of potential North American public equities and global ETF/ Third-Party Manager investments.  The Portfolio Manager will make investment recommendations and decisions in collaboration with Senior Investment team members, including industry research, written investment rationales, and due diligence reviews. Primary emphasis will be placed on supporting the management of concentrated investments in long-term listed North American quality/value companies while also assisting in the selection of Global Equity Managers and other Third-Party Managers, as needed. Further priorities of this role will be assisting with the development and mentorship of a growing investments team and supporting the build-out of key investment infrastructure elements for our expanding portfolios and platform. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

As a member of our team, the Portfolio Manager, Equities will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the on-going development, implementation, and execution of the Public Equities strategy under the direction of the CIO and SIO.
  • Sourcing, researching, recommending, and managing investment opportunities in public markets.
  • Leading and supporting the underwriting process for new opportunities, including (i) detailed financial and business modelling; (ii) preparing detailed diligence of investment opportunities; (iii) preparing investment memos; and (iii) collaboration with other team members on investment research.
  • Executing the trading activities in equities for all the firm’s managed portfolios.
  • Participating in the ongoing management and monitoring of both financial and operational aspects of existing and new investments.
  • Working and collaborating on proposals to enhance risk-adjusted performance of the overall equities portfolio considering all aspects of portfolio management to ensure effective management of costs, risks and after-tax returns.
  • Collaborating with Finance, Legal, Investment Operations & Accounting, and other Investment professionals, on issues related to financial accounting, onboarding/KYC and reporting of the entity’s investments.
  • Supporting the build out of investment performance commentaries for internal distribution to support the CIO and SIO in monthly or quarterly Trustee, Board and Executive management meetings.
  • Developing, training, and mentoring junior staff including daily oversight supervision of the Investment Operations Associate.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of financial, capital markets or investment industry experience/ knowledge gained at a bank, brokerage firm, or wealth management firm dealing with institutional and/or high net worth clients with a discretionary management, ideally including a minimum of 5 years of “buy side” experience.
  • Independently driven and very detail oriented.
  • CIM or CFA designations required.
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg and/or Refinitiv Eikon.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical, financial modelling, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of risk management principles and practices.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to cultivate partnerships and work collaboratively in a team environment with both internal and external partners.
  • Advanced knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
  • Commitment to high ethical standards as well as a positive, cooperative attitude.
  • Willingness to travel across North America as needed (estimated 2-4 times annually).
