POSITION

We are seeking to recruit for a new role, the Director of Derivatives Platform, to guide the ongoing evolution of Wellington's derivatives platform.  This role will be responsible providing the leadership and accountability required to overhaul the derivatives end-to-end operating model and technical infrastructure in order to address existing risks, gaps and deficiencies throughout the derivatives lifecycle to meet current and future investment, client, and regulatory demands.  Wellington utilizes derivatives across all asset classes and has seen a significant growth over the last decade in both order volumes and types of instruments used which has resulted in a considerable strain on existing infrastructure and resources.   The Director of Derivatives Platform will work closely with Investment and Product Management teams and derivative domain experts from each function across the firm (Legal & Compliance, Global Trading, Client Services, Portfolio Services, Information Technology, Product Management) to assess, prioritize and implement strategic and tactical enhancements.   Additionally, the Director will be responsible for interfacing with senior leadership within the firm to champion the needs of this evolution.   This role will be based in Boston, MA and will report to the Director of Portfolio Services, who reports directly to the CEO.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Internal and External Relationships
  • Establish and maintain relationships with internal Investment, Trading, and Product Management teams to assess new products, investment styles, and investors to discuss implications to the derivatives platform
  • Engage with Legal Counsel to understand changes and implications to regulatory and market structure changes in each jurisdiction across the globe
  • Utilize new or existing relationships with buy-side, sell-side, investment consultant firms, and industry groups (e.g. SIFMA) to gain perspective on derivative trends and industry best practices
  • Partner with leads within each function to discuss derivative related challenges and ideas and develop future state vision for derivatives platform and roadmap to achieve this future state
  • Lead discussions with various Wellington committees, including Operating, Compensation, and Risk Management Committees, to advocate for on-going evolution of the end-to-end derivatives platform
  • Work closely with IT leads and the IT Priorities Committee to drive strategic derivatives initiatives


Firm-Wide Vision, Governance & Change Management
  • Define and maintain strategic vision for Wellington's derivatives platform (roles & responsibilities across functions, processes, and technology) and continuously communicate this vision to senior leadership, investment teams, and functional leads to align expectations and sustain the support necessary to achieve this vision
  • Establish firm-wide governance process to gather and assess derivatives related requests and issues that have cross functional impact
  • Work closely with derivative domain experts across the firm to rationalize and prioritize these requests and issues amongst  strategic derivatives initiatives
  • Coordinate change across the organization to ensure firm realizes the full benefits of tactical and strategic initiatives
  • Serve as thought leader and help to elevate derivatives IQ across the firm through formal and informal training sessions and informational presentations


Platform Implementation Management
  • Establish and manage activities of the new Derivatives Platform Management function.  This function is comprised of 10 people across two teams: 
    • Client-Counterparty Agreement Management Team - Responsible for the efficient onboarding of Wellington's clients at dealers, management of broker restrictions, and management of derivatives documentation
    • Derivatives Platform Implementation Management Team - Responsible for the assessment, prioritization, and delivery of derivatives related strategic and tactical initiatives, new investor or client requests, new regulations and market structure changes, and cross-functional issues
  • Serve as the single point of contact for Investment and Trading teams on derivatives related requests and cross-functional issues/risks
  • Oversee the implementation of prioritized enhancements and resolution of cross-functional issues including working closely with functional and IT leads


QUALIFICATIONS
A successful candidate should have the following qualifications:
  • A minimum of 10 years of derivatives related experience with deep expertise in investment, trading, and/or operational processes at buy-side, sell-side, or management consulting firms
  • Proven leadership experience in building and managing various aspects of a derivatives business
  • Strategic and innovative mindset and ability to be decisive in the face of ambiguity
  • Strong program and project management skills and a proven delivery track record
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience in a collaborative, team-based, results-oriented environment
  • Experience managing a multi-faceted team
  • Independence of thought, intellectual curiosity, and an entrepreneurial nature
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Strong academic credentials, MBA/CFA/CAIA preferred
